Emilia Wickstead Autumn/Winter 2012 London Fashion Week

The Royal Couturier

Designer name: Emilia Wickstead
Origin: Auckland, New Zealand. Emilia moved to Milan at the age of 14 and then onwards to London at the age of 19.
Design background: Emilia spent her formative years in Milan and gained a BA in Fashion Design and Marketing at Central Saint Martins, London with honours (2007). Living in New York, Milan and London, Emilia orked in the design studios at Giorgio Armani, Narcisco Rodriguez and Proenza Schouler and on editorial at American Vogue. “I learnt how to work with established brands which in turn gave me an understanding of how fashion companies are run in the ‘real’ world – the business and management side of a fashion label as well as production and design. I also grew up with my mother having her own made-to-measure business which is where I gained most insight to these areas.”She founded her brand in 2008, with private showrooms in Chelsea and Knightsbridge and in October 2009 launched her flagship store in Belgravia, London. Spring/summer 2012 is Emilia's first season showing on the presentation schedule at London Fashion Week.
Design signatures: “The epitome of chic. Classic with a twist. Sophisticated, wearable, modern and fresh.”
Career highlight: “The success of opening my atelier in Belgravia after one year in business.”
How would you describe the Emilia Wickstead woman?

“Successful, sophisticated and fun.”
Trademark piece: “We have a trademark detail – pleats!”
Three spring/summer 2012 inspirations:
“Charming moments from harmonious summers in Palm Springs; champagne garden and pool parties; prints.”
What’s next for your brand?

“Expansion into ready-to-wear and into international markets.”
Who are your design heroes?

“Bianca Jagger, Miuccia Prada and The Rat Pack.”
What’s your favourite cultural hotspot in the capital?

 “Any place that’s Art Deco.”
In five years’ time I will be… "I hope bigger and better."
